Welcome to the most comprehensive online travel guide for Alaska, Western Canada and Northwest USA

South Slave Region

Welcome to the South Slave Region of Canada’s Northwest Territories. Located in the southwest part of the NWT, access is as easy as a drive north from Alberta on the Mackenzie Highway system or quick air connections from Edmonton.  Communities include Fort Smith, Hay River, Enterprise, Fort Resolution and Kakisa.

The geography of the southern region is as diverse as its people, with forests, waterfalls, tundra, rivers and lakes.  Outdoor adventure is big in this region.  Camping, fishing, hiking, canoeing, rafting, kayaking, nature watching and hunting can all be found here, in the heart of one of the largest unspoiled wilderness areas left in the world.

The parks of the South Slave region rank with the world’s great parks and chief among them is Wood Buffalo National Park.  This park is a vast natural wilderness of bogs, rivers, wildlife, salt plains, and jewel-like lakes set amid the great, silent boreal forest.  It is home to the world’s largest free-roaming bison herd and the last nesting refuge of the rare whooping crane.  Extensive camping facilities are available.  Stop in at the park office in Fort Smith to see what is available at the park.

Territorial campgrounds are located at the 60th Parallel, Twin Falls Gorge Park, Little Buffalo River Falls Park, Queen Elizabeth Park and Hay River Park.

Main attractions in the South Slave region include a visitors’ centre and campground on the 60th Parallel, Louise and Alexandra Falls, golf courses in Hay River and Fort Smith, Salt Plains and bison in Wood Buffalo National Park, white-water rafting and kayaking on the Slave River, pelicans and cranes at the Slave River rapids and much more!

Special events include celebrations of the arrival of spring such as Wood Buffalo Frolics in Fort Smith, and the Kamba Winter Carnival in Hay River. Fort Resolution hosts their NWT Dog Sled Championships in March.  Enterprise celebrates with the Gateway Jamboree in July.  Fort Smith hosts their annual music festival, the South Slave Friendship Festival, in mid-August.
