Chickaloon Google Map from here to

Location: Mile 76 Glenn Highway 1. Population: 150.

Once referred to by the Chickaloon Natives as "the unknown river" Chickaloon boomed in the early 1900s as a U.S. Navy coal town.

The Alaska Railroad reached Chickaloon in October of 1917 and was used to ship coal to Anchorage. During this boom time, Chickaloon had a population that exceeded 2500 inhabitants. These inhabitants were serviced by the modern conveniences available at that time and enjoyed a rather high standard of living, including a local hospital.

When the Army's need for coal ceased so did Chickaloon and very little of Chickaloon was left behind. Even many of the buildings were moved out. However, this beautiful area offers horseback trips, hiking trails, kayaking, rafting and fishing to today's traveler.
