One of the routes out of Fairbanks is the Steese Highway, which leads travelers 163 miles into the land of central Alaska and the "hot waters" of the Circle Hot Springs area.
The route begins heading northbound as Alaska Highway 2 from the intersection of Alaska and George Parks highways on the southeast side of Fairbanks. In approximately 10 miles the road to Chena Hot Springs branches off. At the village of Fox, Highway 2 continues northwest as the Elliot Highway.
The Steese Highway turns northeast as Highway 6, following the Chatanika River for much of its length. It passes through Eagle Summit Pass (3624 ft/1105 m), then through village of Central, where it intersects the Circle of Hot Springs Road from the southeast, then terminates at the village of Circle, 50 miles south of the Arctic Circle.
