Friday Harbor was originally settled by British and Americans, an arrangement which was sorely put to the test in the 1860s when war nearly broke out over a killed pig. There are many opportunities for wildlife viewing in this scenic island setting, one of the most diverse marine habitats anywhere, including a large bald eagle population and whale watching. The local museum offers kayak trips guided by museum educators and an Orca Adoption Program.
