Location: Yukon Highway 9 from Dawson City to Alaska border, where Hwy 9 changes to Hwy 5 to Chicken and Tetlin Junction.
The Top of the World Highway commences outside Dawson City as Yukon Hwy 9 and is a seasonally maintained gravel road open in the summer only. From Dawson, cross the Yukon River by government ferry and drive through mountains and valleys until you reach the Yukon/Alaska border. From here, the road becomes the Taylor Highway 5 and leads to the small community of Tetlin Junction nestled at the fork of the Taylor and Alaska Highways, approximately 13 miles east of Tok, Alaska.
It’s a perfect circle tour—from Whitehorse to Dawson, over the Top of the World/ Taylor Highway to Tetlin Junction, south along the Alaska Highway, past the magnificent St. Elias Mountains, returning to Whitehorse. Open to summer traffic only. The government ferry at Dawson City crosses the Yukon River. Ferry service is provided free of charge by the Yukon Territorial Government. The ferry shuts down for 15 min. at shift change and refueling at 6 a.m., 2 p.m. & 10 p.m., and also every Wednesday for servicing from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. Otherwise it operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from approximately May 20th to mid-October.
