Canal Flats

A geological anomaly where a mile wide strip of land separates the headwaters of the Columbia River which flows north from Columbia Lake and the Kootenay River which flows south. A canal was built in 1889 to connect the bodies of water and two riverboats plied the waters. Today the remains of the canal may be seen from the highway.
