Houston had its beginnings in the early 1900s, with farming and logging supporting the community’s growth. In 1912, the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway was built and tie-cutting became a local industry. The 1940s saw the first planer and the first gang mill established. In 1949, a Forest Ranger station was built to meet the demands of the rapidly increasing lumber industry.
Situated in the Bulkley Valley, at the confluence of the Bulkley and Morice Rivers, Houston is a beautiful vacation location. Houston’s excellent river fishing has earned it the title of “Steelhead Capital of the World.” The Morice River holds rainbow trout, cutthroat trout and Dolly Varden and it offers outstanding fishing for Steelhead trout, chinook and coho salmon in season. The area is known for superb lake fishing as well. Steelhead Park is located along Highway 16 next to the Visitor Information Centre.
