Location: Stewart-Cassiar Highway 37; 9 miles north of Kitwanga/Gitwangak.
The village of Kitwancool (Gitanyow) is the site of many ancient, impressive totem poles. The famous Canadian painter Emily Carr captured the striking majesty of many of these poles after a visit to the area in 1928. “Hole-in-the-Ice” is the oldest standing totem pole in the world. Carving sheds, a graveyard and a community smokehouse also occupy this site, a living museum of totem carving.
