The history of the Rocky Mountain House area began in the late 1700s with the fur trade and the early 1800s presence of Canada's most famous explorer David Thompson. Today the multiple fort sites are preserved as Alberta's only National Historic Site. Clearwater County surrounds the town with over 7000 square miles of some of the most beautiful scenery in western Canada, and offers great summer and winter wilderness recreational fun. Enjoy adventure tours, old-fashioned rodeos, heritage site camping opportunities, fabulous fishing, golfing, hiking and the city's museum, located in the same building as the Visitor Information Centre right off Hwy 11.
