Wood Buffalo National Park

Location: Road access via Highway 5, east and south from Hay River, Northwest Territories. Fort Smith and Fort Chipewyan lie on the eastern boundary of the Park and are connected by winter road. Fort Chipewyan is also accessible in winter from Fort McMurray, Alberta. Mikisew’s Contact Airlines provides air service to Fort Chipewyan six days per week; a number of air charter services are also available from Fort McMurray. In the middle of the Park, Peace Point connects with both Highway 5 and a winter-only road northwest out of Fort Chipewyan. Established in 1922, Wood Buffalo is Canada’s largest national park with over 45,000 sq. km (17,100 square miles) of protected land. The 2,500 bison in the park comprise the largest free-roaming, self-regulating herd in the world. The park encompasses the sub-arctic wilderness of the boreal plains and is home to endangered species such as the whooping crane and the peregrine falcon. The Park offers educational interpretive programs, two visitor information centres, fishing, boating, hiking and camping.
